Dahlonega Relocation Guide

Are you thinking of moving to Dahlonega? Relocation can be stressful unless you have the information you need to make it easy. The information below should assist you in having an easy and efficient moving experience.

Driver’s License

New Georgia residents must apply for a Georgia driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. All other driver’s licenses must be surrendered in order to receive a Georgia license. Applicants 18 years of age or older who surrender a valid license issued by another state that has not been expired for more than two years are only required to successfully pass an eye examination. Applicants who do not surrender a valid license or who surrender an expired license will be required to pass an eye examination, road rules test, road signs test, and driving test. The fee for a driver’s license is $20 for a five-year license, payable in cash.

Applicants need proof of Georgia residency such as a utility bill, bank statement, rental contract, employer verification or a Georgia license issued to a parent, guardian or spouse, original or certified copy of an original state-issued birth certificate, certificate of birth registration, certified copy of court record, certified naturalization records, immigration I.D. card, or valid passport. All unlicensed applicants under 18 will be required to show (on a form prescribed by the Department of Driver Services) they have completed a course on alcohol and drugs before they are issued a driver’s license. All applicants under the age of 18 must provide a Certificate of Attendance as proof of enrollment in school or have received a GED, a high school diploma, or completed high school.

A Social Security number is required to obtain a driver’s license. It is not necessary to have your original Social Security card. Those in the country legally but without a Social Security number need to obtain a Form SSAL676 from a local Social Security Administration office before visiting a DDS customer service center to apply for a driver’s license. The individual must have the necessary documentation including a valid passport or valid I-94 permit, proof of Georgia residency, and must surrender a foreign driver’s license (if applicable).
